Our Head Coach / Founder

JESSICA DEFFENBAUGH

BJJ Brown Belt • Combat Sports Trainer • Program Development Lead

Jessica Deffenbaugh brings a rare combination of elite martial arts instruction, corrective movement expertise, rehabilitation knowledge, and deeply personal resilience to her role as Head of Martial Arts Programming at the High Alpine Training Club and The Sports Office. A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt under Jaime Fletcher of ASAP Jiu Jitsu (Rigan Machado / Erik Paulson lineage), Jessica has spent more than a decade helping athletes and everyday individuals transform their physical and mental performance through martial arts, strength training, mobility, and recovery-focused coaching.

Jessica began her fitness career in 2012 before launching her own training business in 2013, later earning certifications in corrective exercise, neurokinetic therapy (NKT), and fascial stretch therapy (FST). After discovering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2016, she quickly became immersed in the sport, competing within weeks and eventually opening The Lighthouse Academy in Big Bear Lake, where she built a respected mountain martial arts community featuring seminars and guest instruction from some of the country’s top athletes and coaches.

Known for her holistic and highly personalized approach, Jessica combines biomechanics, mobility training, rehabilitation modalities, functional movement systems, and martial arts instruction into programming designed to help people of all ages and skill levels build confidence, discipline, resilience, and long-term wellness. Her work extends beyond the mats — mentoring students through personal growth, recovery, and life transformation.

At HATC, Jessica leads the expansion of martial arts, combat sports, mobility, youth programming, women’s self-defense, recovery integration, and performance-based training initiatives as part of The Sports Office’s growing altitude performance platform in Big Bear Lake.

Train at New Heights

Train with Purpose: Our House Rules

House Rules:

  • No shoes, food, gum, or drinks on the mats (water is ok).
  • No bare feet outside of the mats and no shoes on the mats.
  • Please respect everyone’s space by storing your gear in the appropriate places.
  • Have fun, make friends, and be willing to learn!

Code of Conduct:

  • Wash your Gi and workout clothes after every class. If you are taking multiple classes, bring extra workout clothes to change into before taking the next class.
  • Clean and sanitize your gym equipment (gloves, bag, etc.) Disinfectant wipes are great for this.
  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed to prevent scratches and infection.
  • Long hair should be tied up.
  • All jewelry, bracelets, necklaces, and piercings must be removed before class.
  • Absolutely no bare feet in the restrooms or on the floors outside of the mats.
  • Please do not arrive to class smelling of perfume or cologne (but please apply deodorant!).
  • If you are sick, please stay home and rest. You can resume your training once you are better. Be mindful of your fellow students!
  • If you have any open wounds, ensure that they are completely covered before class starts.
  • Do not train with active skin infections (ringworm, STAPH, etc.) If you are not sure if you have an infection on your skin, please ask an instructor.
  • Please have respect for the facility, all students and staff, and the instructors.
  • When you are sparring, please be mindful of the age, ability, and experience of your partner. It’s generally a good idea to communicate with your partner how hard you want to spar. And remember, protect yourself at all times.
  • Grapplers, when you are in a submission, be clear with your tap by tapping your partner’s body or with a strong verbal “tap.” Set your ego aside and avoid injury by tapping early and often. Everyone wants to go home with their limbs in the same place when they first walked into the building. Let’s push each other, not break each other!
  • There is no tolerance for harassment of students or staff, including sexual harassment, coercion, unwanted sexual advances, targeted disrespectful or sexually explicit language. We want everyone to be welcomed and to train in a safe environment.
